Spring Home Maintenance Checklist for New England Homeowners

    January 16, 20256 min read

Spring in New England is recovery season for your home. Winter storms, ice, and freeze-thaw cycles take their toll. Here's your post-winter action plan.

    Roof

  1. Walk around and look for missing, damaged, or curling shingles
  2. Check flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights
  3. Look for debris accumulation in valleys
  4. Schedule a professional inspection if your roof is over 15 years old
  5. Gutters and Downspouts

  6. Clean out all debris — leaves, shingle granules, and sediment
  7. Check for sagging or pulled-away sections
  8. Ensure downspouts direct water at least 4 feet from the foundation
  9. Consider gutter guards if clogging is a recurring problem
  10. Siding and Exterior

  11. Inspect for winter damage — cracks, loose panels, ice damage
  12. Power wash (gentle setting) to remove winter grime
  13. Check caulking around windows and doors
  14. Look for signs of pest entry (holes, gaps)
  15. Foundation

  16. Walk the perimeter looking for new cracks
  17. Ensure grade slopes away from the foundation (6" drop over 10 feet)
  18. Check window wells for debris and proper drainage
  19. Deck

  20. Inspect for loose boards, popped nails, and structural issues
  21. Clean with a deck cleaner or pressure washer
  22. Plan staining/sealing for wood decks (wait until temps are consistently above 50°F)
  23. Check railings for stability
  24. Landscaping

  25. Trim branches that touch or overhang the house
  26. Clear mulch and debris away from siding (maintain 6" gap)
  27. Check that yard drainage flows away from the home
