How Long Does a Roof Replacement Take?

    January 9, 20254 min read

One of the most common questions we hear: "How long will my roof be torn apart?" The answer is shorter than most people expect.

    Typical Timeline

For an average-sized Rhode Island home (1,500–2,500 sq ft):

  1. Simple gable roof: 1 day
  2. Average complexity (some valleys, dormers): 1–2 days
  3. Complex roof (multiple levels, many penetrations): 2–3 days
  4. Very large or complex homes: 3–5 days
  5. What Affects Duration

    Size

More square footage = more time. Simple math.

    Complexity

Valleys, dormers, skylights, chimneys, and multiple roof planes all add time for careful flashing work.

    Layers to Remove

A single tear-off is faster than removing two layers of old shingles.

    Weather

Rain delays aren't optional — we never install on a wet deck. We monitor forecasts carefully and schedule accordingly.

    Decking Repairs

If rotten plywood is discovered during tear-off, replacement adds time. We can't know the full extent until the old roof is removed.

    Material

Asphalt shingles install faster than metal, slate, or shake.

    What to Expect During Installation

  6. Morning: Crew arrives, sets up safety equipment, begins tear-off
  7. Midday: Old materials removed, decking inspected/repaired, underlayment installed
  8. Afternoon: New shingles installed, flashing and ventilation completed
  9. End of day: Cleanup, magnetic nail sweep, final inspection
  10. Our Commitment

We never leave your home exposed overnight. If we start a tear-off, we finish it — or install temporary weatherproofing if weather forces a pause.
